Preparation of historical binders with high resistance to ambient influences
Nehybka, Josef ; Palovčík, Jakub (referee) ; Opravil, Tomáš (advisor)
This master’s thesis is focused on preparation of the mortar mixtures inspired by roman cement with a great resistivity against the corrosion environment, especially a seawater. There were prepared samples of a roman cement containing of pure lime and various artificial pozzolans and natural tuff which were used as pozzolan admixtures. The task of this work is to explore possibility of using pure lime and for example pozzolan admixture which can resist against the corrosive environment like a roman cement. There were prepared a lot of various samples which were tested separately on their mechanical characteristics before and after their exposure of the influence of the corrosive environment. There were used X-ray diffraction analysis for the characterization of a phase composition of the raw materials and some selected samples.
Seawater desalination
Research of Equipment for Sea Water Treatment and Other Applications
Hájek, Zdeněk ; Klemeš,, Jiří (referee) ; Odstrčil, Miloslav (referee) ; Jegla, Zdeněk (advisor)
As water resources are rapidly being exhausted, more and more interest is focused on the desalination of sea water and brackish water. Increasing amounts of fresh water will be required in the future due to the rise in population rates, increasing living standards and the expansion of industrial and agricultural activities. The thesis is concentrated on current issues of treatment of sea water, mainly the desalination based on the distillation principle, in order to develop a unit for seawater treatment. The aim is to develop a compact modular unit for seawater desalinate on based on the implementation and evaluation of experimental tests on the experimental unit. The solution includes an overview of systems for treatment of seawater, a discussion of structural and material aspects of the units, design and manufacture of the experimental unit and confrontation the calculated values with the results of experimental measurements.
Brominated and iodinated disinfection by-products
Bednář, Jiří ; Načeradská, Jana (advisor) ; Kopecká, Ivana (referee)
The reaction of a disinfectant with natural organic matter in the presence of bromides and iodides in raw water intended as a source of drinking water produces brominated (Br-DBPs) and iodinated disinfection by-products (I-DBPs) of water. These tend to be more cytotoxic and genotoxic than their chlorinated analogues. However, little information is available on these products compared to chlorinated ones. Therefore, the aim of this work was to provide an overview of natural and anthropogenic sources of bromine and iodine containing substances, to determine their influence on the formation of brominated and iodinated disinfection by-products, and to compare their cytotoxicity and genotoxicity with chlorinated products. Increasing seawater intrusion into the groundwater drinking water source was found to increase the concentrations of Br-DBPs and I-DBPs by up to thousands of percent. A number of substances can be released from water pipe material depending on the material. These include, for example, tenorite and copper cation released from copper piping, iron cation released from cast iron and steel piping, and bromides and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) released from plastic piping. All of these corrosion products contribute to increasing concentrations of DBPs in the distribution network. Both seawater and...
